Bio-Based Materials

The Farmhouse is the first example of how easily, affordably, and beautifully a new group of industrialized, bio-based materials come together with a range of other environmentally produced building products. Materials for The Farmhouse are easily assembled by construction tradespeople and are low- to no-maintenance.

Bio-based building materials are produced from plant fibers including agricultural and forestry by-products such as soy, wheat, corn, kenaf, jute, hemp, bamboo, wood and paper waste. These non-food, non-feed resources are factory-pressed and molded into panels, bricks, and other building products.

Bio-based products are made from agricultural resources, so they are environmentally friendly in many ways. Bio-based building products can replace many petroleum-based building products which supports a cleaner environment and strengthens the US economy.

Bio-based materials were used throughout The Farmhouse for interior walls, ceilings, flooring, movable partitions, cabinets, furniture, shelving, and other construction assemblies. No sheetrock (gypsum board) was used in The Farmhouse. Interior walls are constructed from Gridcore-engineered molded fiber panels. These panels are lightweight, structural, and require fewer framing members than standard wood and sheetrock construction.

A showcase for bio-based, agricultural building materials, the interior of The Farmhouse exhibits these beautiful surfaces, colors, and textures throughout. The Farmhouse has an open plan with a number of movable walls so that spaces can be made larger or smaller based upon occupants' needs.
