Low-To-No Toxin Paints and Sealants
Red + Yellow Door, Sonny Putro

Low- to no-toxin paints and sealants are used throughout The Farmhouse. Since paints, sealants, and adhesives protect buildings and help them endure over time, these products must be tough and yet not harmful to animal and plant life. A number of companies are working to meet environmental criteria for these products since chemicals in paints, sealants, adhesives, and similar products can have powerful long and short term health affects on humans, plants, animals -- the planet. It is critical that consumers support markets for environmentally developed paint and sealant products. The low- to- no toxin paints and sealants chosen for The Farmhouse are from the following companies.

General Paints and Sealants:
As the main paint product line for The Farmhouse, designers selected AFM brand paints and sealants. AFM has spent over 15 years developing a complete line of paints, sealants, and adhesives from water-based sources. The company's goal is complete elimination of any toxins in the company's product line.

Soy Paints and Sealants: Soy-based Nature Stain paints and sealants are also used in The Farmhouse and are work very well with the Cemplank (cementitious wood composite siding) used on the exterior of the home. Soy-based paints and sealants are durable, easy to clean up with soap and water, and come in a beautiful, wide range of colors.

Re-Used and Recycled Paints: Re-used and recycled paints also played a role in The Farmhouse. These were obtained through Western Disposal's Household Hazardous Waste program in Boulder. Through this program, Boulder residents can drop off their unwanted and used paints, sealant, oils, household cleaners and other such items rather than sending them to the landfill. These materials are then recycled by Western Disposal and are free of charge to those in the market for such reused items. In The Farmhouse, products such as linseed oil and some latex paints and sealants were carefully selected through Western Disposal's program.
