Farmhouse Construction
Xeriscape & Site Conditions
Trees as Insulation
Like a layer of clothing around The Farmhouse, existing trees contribute to the thermal integrity of the house by providing shade in the summer and wind break in the winter. Existing trees were calculated into the initial thermal analysis of The Farmhouse since these trees provide thermal control for the home year round.
Composting
Composting, or collecting of household food waste, is accomplished at The Farmhouse through use of a pre-fabricated composting unit located in the rear yard garden area. Composting food waste greatly reduces residential waste headed to the landfill. At the same time, composted material added to a garden and plant beds adds important organic nutrients to the soil.
Xeriscape
Existing site plantings included high-water-use bluegrass and shrubs. These existing plantings will be allowed to slowly die out and will be replaced with low water-use native plants, grasses, and flowers such as those seen in the nearby meadows at the base of the Foothills. This is referred to as xeriscape.
Proper site drainage allows water to run across the site thereby watering plants and trees on its way to public drainage collection.
Materials
The Farmhouse is designed from factory-produced materials which are manufactured from wood waste, agricultural fibers, and wood supplies from controlled or managed forests. These products are used in combination with recycled and re-used materials. The Farmhouse is assembled quickly at the site from low-maintenance materials.
