Interiors -- Materials & Finishes
All materials and finishes are typical throughout The Farmhouse. Please refer to "Materials Guide, Resources, and Companies" on this website for company addresses. Also refer to "Construction" for photo images of the following materials and finishes.Structural System and Finishes
The structural frame system for The Farmhouse includes Trus-Joist engineered lumber, Weyerhauser wood products, Simpson Strong-Tie connectors, reclaimed 100-year-old wood columns, and WoodBrik and Faswall concrete blocks from recycled wood and fly-ash concrete. These materials are integrated with Premier Building Systems' structural insulated panels, referred to as SIPs. Agriboard wheatstraw SIPs are also used in a number of locations to complete the home's SIP package. All interior SIP surfaces of the house, including walls and ceilings, are finished with natural plaster painted with non-toxic paints. The exterior SIP surfaces of the house are finished with natural stucco. Trex products are combined with recycled steel factory floor grating for exterior balconies.
Interior Finishes and Materials
Interior walls, furniture, and casework are constructed from bio-based building panels. These include the following. Primeboard wheat particleboard is used for walls and furniture. Phenix bio-based panels manufactured from agricultural waste including soy, sunflowers, wheat, and newsprint are used for walls, shelves, and furniture. Meadowboard rye grass panels are used for wall surfaces and as the interior of closets.Handrails and stairs are constructed from industrial aluminum scrap and reclaimed wood from communication spools.
Forbo Natural Linoleum is installed throughout the home over in-floor radiant heating.
Gridcore 100% recycled cellulose engineered molded fiber panels are used as a replacement to sheetrock for ceilings and walls. Gridcore is also used for furniture, sliding partitions, and window coverings. NO sheetrock is used for the interior of the home with the exception of the underside of stairs.
AFM paints and sealants are used throughout the home. Eco Products natural wood sealants are used to condition exterior and interior structural wood. Latex paints from the City of Boulder's Household give-away program are used throughout the house to create colorful wall and door finishes.
Cleaning supplies and home products are from Shadowlake and Seventh Generation. Citra-Solve non-petroleum cleaner is use for household cleaning and for tough cleaning of the home's industrial aluminum scrap stairs and handrails.
Inexpensive and non-toxic products such as soda, vinegar, peroxide, and other easy-to-mix solutions are used throughout the house for cleaning. Mineral oil is used to condition the kitchen's reclaimed bowling alley cutting board surface. Recipes for these solutions are available through a number of non-toxic cleaning books.
Reclaimed windows are used to create wall openings in interior walls.
1970's re-used sinks in vibrant colors are combined with high-tech Ipex Kitec plumbing and Delta faucets. Kohler toilets are used throughout.
All interior doors and some exterior doors are all reused and painted with free-of-charge paint from the City of Boulder's Household give-away program. Reclaimed shower door glass partitions create translucent interior walls.
Yemm & Hart recycled plastic panels with fluorescent strips create translucent walls of light for reading and general illumination.
Phenix Biocomposite panels from agricultural waste such as soy and sunflowers and newsprint are used for kitchen cabinets, furniture, and wall panels.
