Since The Farmhouse is designed from materials sized and shaped at factories, and since the house is designed using full sheets of materials, very little waste is generated at the construction site. This design strategy supports a healthier environment and lower construction costs. Traditional project costs generated to the homebuilder through construction include material overages and disposal. Overages are costs the homebuilder pays up front for expected construction material waste that will be thrown in the construction dumpsters. Disposal costs are then paid by the homebuilder to send this dumpster waste to be landfilled, burned or otherwise disposed. The construction techniques and material systems used in The Farmhouse help reduce both of these types of construction waste costs which means savings to the homebuilder.
Statistics in various communities show construction waste in landfills varies anywhere from 15% to 45% or greater. Construction methods for The Farmhouse are possible for all types of construction and demonstrate simple ways to reduce construction waste, landfilling, and their associated project costs.
Construction Recycling and Curbside Recycling Center
At The Farmhouse site, workers dispose of consumer waste such as cans, bottles, food grade cardboard, and other materials in curbside collection containers provided to Boulder residents by the Boulder Energy Conservation Center. This waste is picked up as part of the Boulder curbside waste recycling program and delivered to a local company, Eco Cycle, which sells this waste to recycling markets.
